Inflation in Algeria up 5.6% in July

25/09/2007

Algeria's consumer prices rose 5.6% year-on-year in July according to data published by the statistical institute, ONS, on Monday (September 24th). The CPI index growth accelerated from 5.2% in June and 1.8% in January due to rising food prices. The hike in staple foods was driven mainly by a traditional increase in prices ahead of the holy month of Ramadan. The price of potatoes saw the most significant increase, surging 133% year-on-year in July. Prices of fresh fruit and vegetables also crept upwards by an average of 30% year-on-year in Algiers. Utilities prices remained stable due to government regulation while the price of transport and communications decreased by 1.1%.
