Algeria’s General Director of National safety Ali Tounsi announced Sunday (May 20th) that security forces which were bolstered following the April 11th attacks in Algiers and on the occasion of the May 17th legislative elections will be further reinforced by 17,000 policemen, bringing their number to 200,000 by 2010. Tounsi made the announcement before cadets at the national police academy in Algiers. Tounsi pointed out that the government is studying Algeria's police statutes and is planning measures to improve policemen's professional and social standing, by upgrading their skills and their logistical capabilities for combating crime.
