The Moroccan Interior Ministry announced in a press release Monday (May 7th) that some 1.3 million new voters-- including 700,000 men and 600,000 women—have registered for the September 7th legislative elections. Reportedly, the figure is far below the expected three million. According to government data, 57% of the newly-registered voters are young people between the ages of 18 and 24. Of the more than 14 million Moroccans registered to vote, a total of 1.2 million (8% of eligible voters) registered via text message. Some 125,000 people have visited the voter registration internet site. A second registration period opens on Tuesday and will last until May 14th.
