Maghreb security meeting held in Tripoli

25/04/2007

A meeting gathering security officials from the five Maghreb countries has been underway in the Libyan capital since Monday (April 23rd), El Khabar and L'Expression dailies reported. In light of the recent attacks in Algeria and Morocco, the gathering aims at finding means to counter terrorism and face the al-Qaeda threat in the region. Participants reportedly agreed that the security systems in most of the Maghreb countries are precarious, and that the Algiers and Casablanca bombings have raised concerns that the threat has thus far been neglected. Representatives of Algeria's national security service presented Algeria's urban counter-terrorism mechanisms and provided data about the al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb's geographic positions. The discussions also examined the communication technologies terrorists use, such as the internet.
