A council session of the Maghreb Transport Ministers opened on Thursday (March 29th) in Skhirat, Morocco. Discussions focused on ways to strengthen maritime, air and land transport co-operation between Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania. Maghreb ministers approved plans to liberalise air transport in the region by 2008 and a committee was set up to examine Morocco's proposal for an "Open Skies" deal. The ministers also came to an agreement on several other projects, such as preparing a feasibility study for a Maghreb high-speed train in the medium term and a maritime transport deal, which is expected to be ratified in the near future.
