Former Algerian UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is expected to arrive in Khartoum on Tuesday (23 May) to prepare for the visit of an UN assessment team related to enforcement of the Darfur Peace Accord and the deployment of a UN peace mission in the region. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric indicates Brahimi will be accompanied by Hedi Annabi, deputy undersecretary general for peacekeeping operations. "They will be conducting consultations with the government of Sudan on the role the UN can play in implementation of the Darfur peace agreement, including the proposed transition from an African Union force to a UN peacekeeping operation," Dujarric said.
