Touareg spiritual leader dies

29/12/2005

Hadj Moussa Akhamoukh, the Amenokal of Hoggar, died Wednesday (28 December) at his home in Tamanrasser at the age of 84. Illness prevented the Tourag spiritual leader from being involved in the local and national political scene in the past few years. His home had become a place of pilgrimage and he often resolved disputes between families and Touareg tribes with his legendary wisdom.

Akhamoukh played an important role in Algerian independence, especially when France wanted to separate the Sahara from northern Algeria. He was responsible for purchasing arms from Libya during the war for independence.

Akhamoukh was also member of the national parliament (1977-1992), the National Consultative Council (1992-1993) and the National Council (1993-1994). (Press Release)
