Tunisia to set up 11 desalination plants along its coastline

29/12/2005

The Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture announced plans to set up 11 additional desalination plants throughout the country's coastline in 2006. The ministry concluded a growing demand for water, which exceeds available supplies, exists in the country.

Tunisia currently has 66 desalination plants with potential capacity estimated at 80m cubic metres of water per day. The plants are considered a profitable non-conventional alternative for prevention of water shortages and contribute to the preservation of precious underground water resources. The exact location of the new plants is still to be determined following completion an in-depth study. (Tunisia Online)
